6 tips
1. Principle
ICON treatment is based on a very simple osmosis principle. After etching with Icon-Etch, the osmotic agent, a non-filler resin with high fluidity, is applied to the area of the tooth affected by white spots. Capillary action allows this agent to penetrate deep into the porous enamel, effectively sealing in cavities that haven't yet formed pockets. Another superior effect of this resin is that the opaque white color of the lesions disappears during and after osmosis due to its light refraction properties. The light refraction on the resin then becomes similar to that of healthy enamel. In this way, lesions can be camouflaged and easily improved aesthetically without invasive procedures like drilling. And tooth tissue is preserved to the maximum extent.
-
The light refraction of healthy enamel and the opaque white lesion is different. (Figures 1 & 2)
-
The resin permeates and coats the spongy tissue of the lesion, causing the lesion's refraction to resemble that of healthy enamel, and the visible color to be the same. (Figure 3)
2. Operating Mechanism
-
Icon-Etch: Icon-Etch prepares the tooth for penetrant action. 15% HCl gel is used to erode and remove the hard surface layer. Only when this layer is removed can the penetrant penetrate the porous enamel layer underneath.
-
Icon-Dry: A dry environment (treated with Icon-Dry and blown with air) is necessary for visual assessment of the white spot condition after etching, as well as for the subsequent osmosis process to be carried out.
-
Icon-Infiltrant: A low-viscosity penetrating resin is used to penetrate deep into the enamel via capillary action, and then polymerized by light curing. The resulting lesion exhibits mechanical properties and color characteristics similar to healthy enamel.
